BYuT Prepared Surprise and Replacement for Semenyuk

24.12.2007___ translated by Anna Ivanchenko

State Property Fund (SPF) may be headed by BYuT faction member Andriy Portnov.

Sources from the entourage of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko call him the main aspirant to this post, reports Delo newspaper.

This candidacy is discussed on the level of BYuT leaders. According to coalition arrangements, the post of SPF head has been granted to this political force.

“Next faction meeting will also have this issue on the agenda,” specifies the BYuT source. Portnov’s colleagues name the fact that he used to work in State commission on securities as the one in his favor.

In his turn, Mr. Portnov is reluctant to discuss his career perspectives.

“If I get such offer from the Prime Minister, I will think about it,” admitted the MP. Meanwhile, he notes that the appointment for the post of SPF head is carried out through the Verkhovna Rada.

“There was no such proposal, therefore I cannot comment on anything,” summed up Mr. Portnov.

Meanwhile, BYuT MPs are already preparing to change the procedure of SPF head appointment. Tymoshenko’s companions-in-arms suggest that the candidates for this post are proposed to the parliament not by the President, as it is presently envisaged, but by the Prime Minister.

In the Verkhovna Rada, BYuT MP Valeriy Pysarenko registered a law draft of December 20 of the current year envisaging a new procedure of SPF head replacement.

If the initiative of BYuT is approved by the coalition, the Verkhovna Rada will dismiss and appoint the head of this department according to PM’s proposal. The current version of the law envisages the appointment and dismissal of SPF head by the President with the parliament’s approval.

“It is fully natural for this change to be introduced as the government is responsible for the economic field,” explains Mr. Pysarenko.

He confirmed that Valentyna Semenyuk will resign. In addition, the auditing of State Property Fund activities in 2007 will be carried out.

“It will be more accurate than Semenyuk can imagine, especially for the period when Verkhovna Rada did not work,” claimed Mr. Pysarenko.

According to him, respective requests have already been submitted to the Prosecutor General’s office. Besides, the checks will be carried out by the Vekrhovna Rada special commission on privatization issues and by the new Fund management.
