Lytvyn Has Hopes for Elections but Knows About ‘Secret Protocol’ Distribution

07.07.2007___ translated by Yelizaveta Badanova

People’s party leader, ex-Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn claims that in consideration of the upcoming elections to the Verkhovna Rada key political actors have signed secret protocols to distribute state power and determine their relations by 2009.

“The key political actors have already agreed. Moreover, I think, they have drawn up secret protocols to their ‘Pact’ [meaning the Declaration on democratic force union] to distribute authorities and determine their relations by 2009,” he announced in his interview to Izvestia v Ukraini newspaper adding that elections were ‘inevitable’.

“It is natural that someone should ‘bunko’. And it corresponds to the future presidential election script when Mr. Yanukovych and Mr. Yushchenko will again be opposing each other. Therefore any political newcomers are eliminated at once in order to avoid anything unpredictable,” Mr. Lytvyn stated.

People’s party leader is also convinced that we will soon witness the situation when ‘all the main political forces will be together opposing Mrs. Tymoshenko’ and will try their best to oust her from ‘the political playing field’.

In his turn, Mr. Lytvyn underlines that ‘Lytvyn’s Bloc is making for the elections to get a positive result’.

“And it does not only mean to take the 3% voting barrier but defend the poll results. I am stating our position from the very beginning – we will never recognize those elections not to result in our bloc’s representation in the parliament,” he said mentioning he based his emphatic statement on ‘reliable surveys’.

Mr. Lytvyn also regretted that after 2006 election when his party was unsuccessfully trying to question the poll results, he did not appeal to the court with a personal action.

Commenting on the statement that his party was considered a ‘third force’ he said, “Ukraine needs a political force to represent its central regions. Since both those who profit from problems of the East and those who feed from the West issue are actually using Ukrainians to serve their interests. It causes in weak and slow-developing Ukraine.”

However, People’s party leader mentioned that his political force would lead its election campaign only ‘where it had real support’, the list being drawn up with ‘revolutionary simplicity’.

“The list will be drawn up with regard of the present rating. Our logic is simple – one deputy mandate means 60,000 votes,” he said.

Asked to comment on rumours that Lytvyn’s bloc would be backed up by Our Ukraine member Petro Poroshenko Mr. Lytvyn answered, “It is not true, it will never happen. There is no such thing as a free lunch.”
